Introduction to Research in Education


Education = Research, Policy and Practice. 
  • What research is and the roles that it can play: 
"Research is a process of steps used to collect and analyze information to increase our understanding of a topic or issue. At a general level, research consists of three steps." 
"Research adds to our knowledge and improves practice."
  • The basic steps in the research process
  1. Pose a question.
  2. Collect data to answer the question.
  3. Present an answer to the question." (Creswell, 2011, p.3)

Caro-Bruce, Flessner, Klehr & Zeichner (2007) suggest some questions that might help you to identify an area:
  • What would I like to improve? eLearning tools used at my school to support learning. Engage children in their learning and put children in the driving seat for which tool would work in regards to showing what they have learnt or help them building knowledge. 
  • What am I perplexed by? That there is a variety of mindsets around using technology at my school. I don't understand how some people can't see the amazing effect of tools. Some teachers undermine students ability when it comes to technology. I think they are afraid of giving it a go or the children knowing more than them. 
  • What am I really curious about? If teachers choose their own goal will this help them to guide their own next steps for their class. 
  • What do I think would really make a difference? Developing the tuakana teina concept to support teachers who feel less confident or who need more guidance in some areas. I need to spread my expertise around more than just my classroom. 
  • What is something I would like to change? Mindsets towards the use of technology. 
  • What would happen to my students’ learning if I did _______? It would be supported and enhanced by technology. 
  • How can I implement the tuakana teina concept to guide the use of eLearning tools at NPS? 
  • How can I improve teachers confidence towards using technological tools in their classroom?

Integrating the principles of Kaupapa Maori Research into your Teacher Inquiry: 

Tuakana teina concept links to:
  • Ako Māori - The Principle of Culturally Preferred Pedagogy
This principle promotes teaching and learning practices that are unique to tikanga Māori (custom). There is also an acknowledgment of ‘borrowed’ pedagogies in that Māori are able to choose their own preferred pedagogies. Rangimarie Rose Pere writes in some depth on key elements in Māori pedagogy. In her publication Ako she provides expansive discussion regarding tïkanga Māori concepts and their application to Māori pedagogies.
  • Whānau - The Principle of Extended Family Structure
The whānau and the practice of whanaungatanga (family connectedness) is an integral part of Māori identity and culture. The cultural values, customs and practices that organise around the whānau and collective responsibility are a necessary part of Māori survival and achievement. There are many examples where the principle of whānau and whānaungatanga come to the foreground as a necessary ingredient for Māori education, Māori health, Māori justice and Māori prosperity.
  • Kaupapa - The Principle of Collective Philosophy
Kaupapa Māori initiatives are held together by a collective vision and commitment. In Māori education, for example, ‘Te Aho Matua’ is a formal charter that has collectively been articulated by Māori working in Kaupapa Māori initiatives. This vision connects Māori aspirations to political, social, economic and cultural well-being. Likewise in Māori health, a healthy Māori would have be healthy politically, culturally, socially and economically.
